A small group of thoughtful, committed Jamaican businesswomen in leadership positions are working hard to transform the country by adopting projects which will impact significantly on communities.
These women are part of the United Way of Jamaica Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI), a group which stems from the former United States Ambassador to Jamaica, Sue Cobb’s “Building Bridges Exchange”. Building Bridges is an initiative that fosters economic development, knowledge-sharing and partnering among female business leaders in Jamaica and Florida.
With this in mind, one corporate entity has come forward to support the WLI’s mission. The company - NEM Insurance – has committed $500,000 to assist with the upliftment of the Mary Issa Clinic at the Voluntary Organization for the Upliftment of Children (VOUCH), a project undertaken by the WLI.
VOUCH, founded in 1979, is an organisation that enables parents in innercity communities to seek gainful employment while having their children in a safe, protected and friendly environment for social and academic development.
Judith Kean, Assistant General Manager for Strategic Planning and Marketing at NEM, said the money will be handed over in two tranches, and will be used by the WLI to improve conditions at the Mary Issa Clinic.
“We decided to help in a meaningful way by contributing to the area of health at VOUCH. The money will be used to build a sick bay and a lunch room for the staff,” Mrs. Kean said.
The Clinic, operated by Hope Worldwide, focuses on providing HIV/AIDS Rapid Test Kits for pregnant mothers, serves the communities of Allman Town, Fletcher’s Land, Denham Town, Tivoli, Kingston Gardens, Orange Villa and Central Kingston.
